What are your priorities as you think about a residence in the Avalon region?  One often hears location, location, location, but if you are a family with school-aged children, this takes on a new meaning. In our experience, parents often search for a home based on the school they have chosen for their children. If this is a priority in your home purchase decision, the following outlines the K-12 schools in the St. John’s region and resources which you may want to check out:

The Eastern School District is the the public school system in the St. John’s region. This District offers a full French immersion program.

Conseil Scolaire Francophone is part of NL’s Francophone public school system.

Privately run schools include St. Bonaventure’s College, an independent Roman Catholic School and Lakecrest Independent School .

Brother T.I. Murphy Learning Resource Centre is a non-profit, charitable organization which provides alternative educational and learning opportunities to youth who have dropped out of school but wish to complete their education.

If you are exploring real estate not as a parent but as an investor, the effect of school zoning is readily apparent with respect to real estate values in a given area. Buyers will pay to get into a home in the zone of a preferred school. However, we wouldn’t recommend buying real estate specifically for the school system when buying as a long-term investment. The reasoning is that schools age and in ten years a top school may be considered below average. However, on the flip side, if buying real estate as a short-term investment, then purchasing within the boundaries of a great school could be very beneficial.

Whether you are a family looking for that certain school area or looking to invest, we’re here to give you professional advice and to help you find the best value and fit for your needs.
